Do stories have to be 'true'?

Review your close read highlighting of Tim O'Brien's comments we read yesterday, then write a response to this question:

Is it different knowing it’s (the story "On the Rainy River" or the whole book, actually) technically not real? Explain in writing whether or not it is important for stories about historical events, or this story in particular, to be ‘true’ or ‘real

  1. Yes i think it's different, because he wouldn't be sure of how he would make up his mind. What if he actually was on the border to Canada, would he then have done it?? But the deeper meaning doesn't really change, it's a metaphor for how he felt during that time.

  2. I think as O'Brian said that is not important if the story is real or not, the important part is what comes out of it, the feelings the impression that he gave us. Of course we need to know what is true or not what is fake is important too. The historical events must be true but the story that he tells us if is coherent with it can be changed

  3. The story actually has more meaning because of the fact it's not real. At first, it was about the struggles of one individual person. now it's about the struggles that everyone has between right and wrong. Stories that are made up to teach lessons actually have a deeper meaning than real stories, because than its easier for a person to put themselves in the story.

  4. I think it shouldn't matter because when the he makes stuff up it still has a little bit of truth in it and the writer is just making it more of his story and what he had felt. and if you weren't there you wouldnt know the full truth ever so the book is true to your self and all the other readers unless you are there

  5. I feel like if your gonnna tell a story about a historical even that happend the writer should be truthful about it and not lie about what happened and confuse people. People wanna know the truth about what happened if someone writes a book about historical things that happened while they were at war people wanna know they are telling the truth and not trying to make themselves look better when they are actually being a coward.

  6. I don't think that it matters that it actually happen because it gave a lot better explanation to what he was going through and the decisions he had to make. And he rote it the way he intended it to by making it about what was in his heart not about the war.

  7. I don't think it is different if it isn't real because if you never heard about it before then you would think that it is all true. I don't think it really makes much of a difference because you probably don't know the real truth unless you were there when it happened. The writers just put in fake stuff to make it look better and make it more interesting to other people.

  8. This really doesn't impose on what i think if it is fiction or non-fiction. These stories are view-able in the way it is shown. This story is not far fetched and there are many ways to relate. The way the events went we will still learn no matter what happens.

  9. I feel it does take away from the over all feeling of the book if it is fake. Like if one of his teammates were to die I wouldn't feel as much emotion from it. Even if his feelings were real the event being fake makes the impact less so.

  10. In my own opinion I think it is different knowing that in this case it's not real. A person would think if a story is being told about a historical event that it would be true, and why exaggerate the actual truth. I know it makes for a better story in the end, but thinking of this book differently because it's not true is not a bad thing necessarily. It's just knowing that this book is not true gives me a different feel of the actual character itself. The emotions are different towards the book. I think that it is important for historical events to be true because that is history. History is fact based and set in stone. Stories are different, stories don't always have to be real, it's from that persons point of view and how they want to express their self. History can be told from many points of view but it should be the real deal. The whole thing with it being not a true story is just because it makes a better story.

  11. I believe that it is important that we read this story even though most of it is false information. I think this because it gives us as readers a little more in site information as to what is going on at this time in history. The way Tim O`Brien writes this story shows that he is trying to show us that some of these events actually happened and a lot of them did not happen. I think that he is trying to keep us entertained as we read the book

  13. I think that a story should be real not always honest. A writer needs you to know his or her feelings of the situation, they need you to picture what was going on in that book story article. They need sometimes to lie and make it more dramatic so that you can fully feel and see what they are trying to say. Honesty in books is not a must realistic is a must with out realistic a story is crap

  14. I don't think it matters if it's fully true. It's about the truth inside of it. It doesn't have to be true because it gives us an idea of what people back then went through going to war. Like Tim said War stories are about the Human Heart.

If you are reading a war story the book should have the events that happened and shows characters emotions and the things they carry.
