•What
are the two most important points/pieces of information/phrases/quotes from
what we read yesterday?
Write
each point and then a short explanation (2-3 sentences) of why you feel that is important for each.
"go and wake the neighbors" said my father. They must get ready..." This is an important part because he is trying to gather all the Jews so they can go to this camp and not get punished for not being ready. Where were the people being taken? did anyone know yet? this is important because nobody really knew how bad it was going to be and what they would have been doing. and they never thought it would get any worse than sitting in the hot sun all day with no water or food
This is important because even though that they are in trouble they wouldn't split up for their safety, which I think a lot of jews did during the war. They got split up and might never have found out if they're alive or dead and where they are.
In fact we thought this was not specifically not a bad thing (page 11-Wiesel)
This is important because they started living with "trust" to the germans. Which caused them not to flee, and they thought everything was gonna be just good.
One of the most important pieces of information throughout this section was the Germans kicking the Jews out of their homes. The reason I believe that this idea is important because this is just the beginning of what is further coming. It will be a chain of events after this happening. Another important piece of information was when the Germans took the belongings of others such as gold, jewerly etc... These items are valued by the Jews and I am sure that these items mean a lot to them! I think it's showing the Jews how cruel the Germans are going to be to them. Taking their valuables is probably a big eye-opener to the Jews. They are being controled by them entirely!
''All Jews, outside! Hurry!'' They were followed by Jewish police, who, their voices breaking, told us: "the time has come. . . you must leave all this. . .(pg 16) This is important because of the fact its their final moments they will be at their home and maybe the last time they would see it not knowing their fate due to them thinking they are leaving because their to close to the war front.
Another part in the book is on (pg17) when he said we didn't eat that day because they weren't hungry . they were exhausted. They don't know what exhaustion is yet or even being hungry because they haven't lived through the war yet.
One of the most important part of the begin of the book is when Elie said "I want to be the first one out so I don't have to see my parents faces.(page 18)" I think this is important because its showing that he doesn't want to see his dad and mom cry. Witch it shows that he cares on how his parents feel and he doesn't want to upset them anymore then they are already. Another thing I find important is when they where getting on the trucks to go where they were going. I find this important because how is it far to Elie that he doesn't know where they are going but the guy they is running the show knows. Who knows whats going to happened to them while they are on the trucks.
when there family freind was knocking on the window to tell them to leave... This is important because it was a possibility to leave before something went wrong. It was a chance of a "free" life. This was a chance of redemption but they missed it. Also when they were waiting in the street to leave. This was important because the brutality that had come of there lives was just starting. They just thought they had to move to another town but they had to move to a camp...
"There was nothing else to do but to go to bed, in beds of those who had moved on." (Wiesel 21) Wiesel`s family is feeling like they cannot do anything else without the Germans being angry at them for being themselves. They that there whole world is now in the hands of evil people who hate for reason they can`t understand. They also feel like they will never see each other again so they are huddling up together and hoping that they do not get separated from one another.
"Departures were to take place street by street, starting the next day." I feel this is important because they are getting ready to evacuate everyone from the town. The Jews are very confused on what is going on and where they will be going. "Get ready for the Journey" I feel this is important because they are getting ready to send everyone off to camps and the Jews don't know it yet. The Jews are trying to figure out what they mean when they say "Journey" and what will happen to them.
" I pray to God within me for the strength to ask him the real questions."(Weisel.10) It is important for people to think about the the things that matter, not the unimportant things. That is what Moishe is stating in this quote. " The time has come...you must leave all of this..." This is an important moment because the Jews have accepted that this is happening.
When Elie watched his friends, teachers, and even people he once feared, walk by. It's important, because it shows how everything is already drastically changing people. They are no longer known for their occupation or for their presence. Now, they are just known for one thing: defeated. When Elie saw his dad cry for the first time. It's important because now you know things are truly getting bad. Throughout all of Elie's life, he has never seen his dad cry. Now that they are leaving their homes, everything is becoming more real.
"little by little life returned to "normal." " (weisel 11) They eventually got used to being surrounded by barbed wire. I dont think they should have to live like that.
"It was close to midnight. Nobody felt like going to sleep" (13) They knew they had to leave there houses. It helped understand the feeling happening for them
The journey had just begun and I already felt so weak..(Wiesel,19) I feel like this important because him and his family have to suffer through this. They are getting forced to do this by the Hungarian police.
"There they went, defeated, their bundles, their lives in tow, having left behind their homes, their childhood." (Wiesel, 17) This important because they have to leave behind everything just to suffer through the pain. The children are going through the pain just as much as the adults are.
"go and wake the neighbors" said my father. They must get ready..."
