Challenged Books Discussion

When books are challenged, a formal complaint is made to either a school or library from a concerned individual who is worried about the book being in the hands of children and/or teens.  Sometimes this leads to books being banned by school districts or governing boards so that it cannot be either in the library or taught in a class.

How many books that have been 'challenged' in the past do you think you’ve read? List the titles.

What do you think are the top reasons that books are challenged (in general)?

What are the different reasons why this book (Flight) could be controversial?

What are issues in this book that are issues to teens today?

What in Zits’ life has made him a controversial person? Are those things filled with controversy?

Post you and your partner's answers to all of these questions as a comment on this blog.  Remember to post as a blogger profile (for those of you who were in English 9 with me, it should do this automatically.  Help anyone who has issues if you remember how to do it)

  1. Fahrenheit 451 and Beautiful creates have been challenging books in the past. Books can be challenging from understanding the comprehension and spelling. It is not rated for younger children but for high school kids we are more mature and can understand what is going then like younger kids. For teens today it is foster care, trouble makers, and being ashamed of who you are. For Zits it is not having his parents around or having a role model.

  2. It is controversial because of its word usage and content. I believe that like teens today zits didn't know what he was doing at the time, so he was easily swayed to do the wrong things by justice. Teens today will take any piece of information they can find, whether its good or bad.

  3. Flight can be a very controversial novel. Mainly, I think it is because of the things that happen in the book. The talk of sex drugs and violence. Another reason it's very controversial is because of stereotypes. Zits is part native american, and also a drunk, terrorist, has a hate for white people(Sort of), and is in the foster system. This seems very stereotypical, but he is a person. I feel you should not censor real people, because it is a certain type of person.

We haven't read any books that we know of being banned or "controversial" probably because the banned books have never been given to us to read.
Books are challenged because of their controversial content that may include sensitive topics, real-world experiences, hate, racism, violence, different religious views, abuse of power, and other issues that disturb people's sense of peace.
"Flight" can be considered controversial due to almost every chapter. The inappropriate dialog, gore scenes, violence, hatred, abuse, pain, perverseness, racism, and terroristic views of "Flight" definitely label it as something to be challenged.
Ideas in the content of the book that commonly affect or are present in teens are loneliness, remorse, low self-esteem, abuse, responsibility, expectation, racism, hate, pain, destiny, meaning, shame, sorrow, and morals.
Being a foster child along with that fact's ramifications make Zits and his life controversial. The situation of his family and lineage. The way Zits acts. Zit's minimal belongings. His past foster families that did him wrong. The loneliness he experiences. The ideas Justice installs in Zits that push him to shoot up a bank. The hate, war, and perverse atrocities experienced in Zit's jumps to past bodies.
