Tuesday, Dec. 23 Agenda: Have a great break!

Bell Ringer for those gone yesterday: He calls work of fiction, could anyone write or did you have to experience it first?
Outline a three paragraph answer to this.  Using your list of the things they carried throughout the story, make sure to cite details that could only be known if experienced.  Or explain how people would know these things if anyone could write it, but still use the specific textual evidence that could be known.
Present outline (if you were here yesterday): print up two copies (if done on computer)
Begin reading “Love” and “Spin” independently
While reading, mark evidence in the book to help you answer questions as well as keep track of important ideas or events
Discussion on these stories will be after break, if you don’t finish today, it is homework!

If you finish reading before we move on, work on reading own book

Tuesday, Nov. 18 Agenda

Bell Ringer: Read and react to the quote (half a page, in writer’s notebook)
For many students, Night is their first exposure to Auschwitz…Night grabs the attention of students and never lets go until the end. Like Catcher in the Rye, it is a coming of age story. Like Antigone or Oedipus, it forces students to grapple with universal questions of good and evil. Like 1984 and Brave New World, it asks what kind of society do we live in, what kind of social system have we devised? And above all else, Night asks us to consider what it means to be human." — From Bearing Witness by Beth Aviv Greenbaum
What do you notice about it/what do you think it means or parts of it? What do you agree with? What confuses you? What are you thinking about the book? Etc.
Begin Reading Night (3-11)
From what we read today, pick an image, phrase, line, passage (paragraph or section) or idea and journal on it.
Journal from today
All responses should be honest
How does the part you chose affect you? Emotionally, intellectually, etc?
What do you observe in the book?
What do you connect or associate with this?

Textual Evidence = something from the text

Put together a ‘presentation’ of information, bringing social awareness to the issue that you have focused on
You need to have all notes taken by the end of class Wednesday, at the ABSOLUTE latest
Your project is due next Tuesday, so you should be thinking about how you want to convey your knowledge and who most needs it
Background on the Holocaust

Holocaust Background

At this point in time, you have probably studied the Holocaust a few times in school and been exposed to books or movies that occur in this time (The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, The Book Thief, etc.).  We are going to be reading the book Night by Elie Wiesel, which will give us insight to an individual who lived through this horrendous time period.

With a partner, you need to brainstorm all that you know about the Holocaust (time, people, places, etc.).  You need to post that brainstormed list as a comment to this post and we will use the lists as we begin to discuss our next book.

Paper:
If you aren’t done with your first draft, you need to keep working on it.
You need to meet with me if you have a second draft of your body paragraphs, an intro and a conclusion
Works Cited Page
Before you turn in your paper, create a works cited page and turn it in as the last page in your paper
Research Time
Use your questions (most need to make more) as jumping off points for your research of how your theme is seen today: don’t only use the questions, search other concepts that come up as you find sources!!!
How is the theme you focused on reflected in today’s society? What does this theme and the examples from today say about today’s society?
Create a HUGE list of potential sources –your end goal is to have a larger point about your theme today, not just that it exists (this list needs to be saved with me)
