I feel that the book, The Catcher in the Rye was a very good book in its own aspects of how it was written. for example, in the book it gives the best representation of a teen who has endured great loss and tragedy as well as depression. The main character in the book, Holden, is a boy who's brother died and he is absolutely destroyed by it, making him a hateful and cynical person. Though I think there is an abundance of bad language in the book, I think that just gives a better realist view of the life of Holden in the 1940's.
ReplyDeleteAlthough the book was good my number one flaw was the book lacked plot, to me it never had any direction. through out reading the book I kept thinking that it relates to teens and there depression and situations but now at the end it seems that Holden was just crazy so now I wonder if this is related to teens at all of this day.
ReplyDeleteThe number one thing I kept thinking throughout this whole book was why did kids have so much freedom back in the 50's? I mean Holden did what he wanted and walked around and pretty much did everything he could think of and nobody even questioned it. He went to bars, smoked, ordered a prostitute and walked around New York drunk and not one person seemed to care. How does our society change this much in two generations, If you saw a 15 year old kid walking around drunk nobody would allow it or they would at least question and report it to the police.
In the book "Catcher in the Rye" I really liked how this book actually related to most teens. It talks about how teens in the 50's have struggles and shows how they deal with those struggles. Teens today still have those same struggles its just that we handle them in a different way most of the time. I also like this book because it shows how close siblings are even if they argue and don't live together. That bond can never be broken and will last a life time.
ReplyDeleteThis book is an inspiring one to not just to the class and I, but to teens all around the world. It relates to everybody's situation in some way. Maybe its that you feel alone, or that you don't have that parental guidance that you need. Catcher in the Rye is a book that I enjoyed and spoke to me especially in the sibling way. Even though Holden at the end of the book is unstable, his sister is there for him. She never leaves his side even when he is not at his best. That's what I love about this book, it shows that siblings will do anything for each other.
The Catcher in the Rye was a very interesting book. There are places where I can easily relate to it, and put myself in some of those situations. Some of the things that sparked interest in me, would be Holden's personality. He is a strong independent person that can easily live on his own, once he is in this situation, he easily proves it. One of the things that I did not like of the book would be Holden's decision to mistreat others. He does this because I know that he did not have a good life and has had everyone around him being "phony" he continues to do this.
ReplyDeleteThis book did make me think. It has made me wonder about how people can either be so cruel to one another, or even yet be careless. Some of the people that are careless would be the first cab driver. Holden is asking about the ducks that disappear in the winter, and the cab driver's response was a very cold and negative answer of him not knowing.
The Catcher in the Rye was definitely something I wouldn't expect to be read in school. For obvious reasons; it’s profanity, sexual content, and violence, but to my surprise I really enjoyed reading this book. I relate to some of the ways that Holden felt throughout the book and that really helped me to be more interested in it.
ReplyDeleteThat’s the thing though, it really is. This timely book still relates to many people today, in context--Holden’s feelings, and his thoughts. There were many in depth lessons that this book taught. All of its symbolism and deeper meanings really takes well in a [High School] English class setting.
I’m really glad that we read this book and it is definitely something I would recommend to mature readers.

ReplyDeleteThe Catcher In the Rye was a great novel i have plenty of good things to say about it and few complaints or dislikes. To start off the books way of connecting to us teens today made it pretty easy to understand and relate to. It was always descriptive except for some points in which Holden says things that make no sense at all. But otherwise it was pretty good. It made me think of how life can be when your at that age where your growing up but don't want to and how being mentally unstable doesn't help with that one bit.
ReplyDeleteA few things i disliked were how when he talked about something he kept rambling on about it and would not stop. I just feel as if that's no fun to read and gets annoying at a lot of points. Another thing is the over extended use of the word "phony" it gets really old and you get sick of reading it over and over again. Like i completely understand his issues and mental state but why must you call everyone phonies.
Catcher in the Rye was a good book for me at least. The book made me think about how teenagers that actually had to live by themselves go through maybe not a 100% accurate to Catcher in the Rye but gives a little idea on what it was like. The part i don't like about the book is when Holden is trying to leave again and it makes Phoebe upset. When he tries to make it up to her, she didn't want to see him, she just didn't want him to leave for a long time and not see him anymore.
ReplyDeletei think the book is spectacular to read it felt like a real life situation of someones life.
ReplyDeletethe book got my attention when holden was leaving pencey prep and days goodbye morons. this part seems like a real like it something kids know of days would say. these charters that holden says that everyone phony but in reality hes the one trying to change.
The book "The Catcher In The Rye" had a very relate able feel of everything to me really. I have lost a few that were not my blood brothers, but were my brothers, as in I grew up with them and annoyed them and they teased the living life out of me, and everything that siblings do to one another. We were so close, but now they are here with us no more. I know what it is like to loose someone who you are so close to, it is one of the worst things imaginable. I wish I didn't have to go through it, and I wish that Holden didn't have to either, I believe that he would be a different and a 'better' person so to speak.
ReplyDeleteI have also had/have depression, and I know how much it sucks, and especially how much it changes who you are as a person. I could really relate to this book in nearly every way, except for the things about being a boy that Holden describes, says, does, and more. Altogether though, this book was a perfect read for me, thank you for having us read it.
