Flight Ch. 7 Discussion

Post your group's comments to the questions from the board as a comment to this post.

Questions:

What is this chapter telling us about loneliness?

Why would this camp be Zits' heaven? What would his time as Hank (with Art, Horse, and Elk) be hell?

Talk about voice:
What does the word voice mean more than just literally?
Did Zits have a voice (metaphorically) in his real life?
What could it mean to be without a voice in history?

  1. This chapter is basically telling us that he does not fit in with the white people, and how he really does want and stick with his tribe. Also since he never had a real father figure, this chapter has shown that he had a missing piece to himself. Since now he has that father figure he no longer is lonley.

This camp would be Zits heaven because he wanted to fit in with the crowd and and he is really interested in the tribal camps. Also this is almost everything he had dreamed of.
-(hell) Because he knows that they are all going to die at the end of it all.

Zits does not have a real voice in life because he has no control in anything that comes his way.
    - No Zits did not have a real voice in his life.
    - Would not have any control of what has happened or going to happen to them.

  2. .5) He is always searching for something to make him happy at least for a little bit.
    1) He has a family for the first time, and he had to watch Junior get shot in the face by Art
    2) You can speak without talking by showing people what you mean
    Not really
you wouldnt be a big part of history we would just over look you and act like you didnt exist

  3. This chapter tells us that when someone who is lonely is finally given a family, or someone who loves them and makes him feel good it makes them very happy.

This camp is zits heaven because his whole life all he ever wanted is to have a real family. At this camp he finally gets a real family. Being Hank would be "hell" for Zits because he was against and killing his own people.

Voice is a way empower yourself through communication. It is a way to show emotion and let people know how you feel.
Zits did not have a voice in his real life because he did not express his emotion and let people know how he felt.
Now that he has a family and people he actually wants to talk to, he does not have the physical ability to do so.

  4. 1. The camp is heaven because he finally feels loved and he has a dad who loves him. He felt like he was in hell in his last body cause he had to shoot a dead guy in the face.
    2. In Zits real life he may have a voice but not at the same time because he doesn't make an impact and he feels like nobody is hearing him. In order to be remembered you need to make an impact. If you make a big impact people will listen and believe you unlike the people that don't make an impact.

  5. 1. It is Heaven to him because he is finally loved and he has a family. In his old body he was in hell cause he had to shoot a dead man in the face.
    2. Zits does have a voice but technically he doesn't because he hasn't made a big impact so his voice is not heard. if you dont have a voice in history your story wont be told and people wont know about you but if you have a big impact in history your voice would be heard throughout history

    Loneliness-
The chapter expresses how loneliness applies to people according to their situation (Zits felt a lack of loneliness with his "father" and Justice, but lonely with people who didn't have genuine love for him)

    "Heaven Camp" VS Being Hank-
In the camp, Zits has the role model of a loving father, but being Hank, he had to be the role model that's given the hard choices of dealing with the racism.

    Voice-
Voice reflects identity in that how you use (or don't use) voice shows who you are. As himself, Zits used his voice to abuse what power he did have to choose to get along with foster families: but as the native boy who couldn't use his voice, he was happy even though he couldn't say anything. Zits didn't have a voice in real life because he claimed he was a "bank sky" without an identity to be reflected by voice.
In history, the people that used their voice loudly (MLK, Lincoln, Ghandi, Rosa Parks, Caeser, Shakespeare, etc) have a widely remembered identity because of how they used their voice to be significant in history. The "HOW" is the most relevant part of voice: how you say things to win, so to be without a voice in history is to use your voice to lose by saying unimportant things. "History is written by the victors" -Winston Churchill
