Things We THINK We Know...

With your group, talk about what you 'know' (from first hand experience, from what you've heard from others, from what you've seen in the media, etc) about these two topics:

The Foster Care System in the US

Native Americans

Once you write a point, write with it where that point comes from (personal exp., media, stereotype, second-hand, etc.).

This should go without saying, but I'm not that naive..only write things that are respectful and appropriate when communicating on this blog (and others, but I at least demand it on this one).

  3. Foster Care:
-Lots of paperwork and things get handled very slowly.
-Often times children are put into foster care if they cannot take care of the child, or if they are not fit to.
-They are large foster homes where multiple kids live all together.
-Many many children in the system move from house to house.
-After a certain amount of time and care, the foster parents can file to adopt a child in the system.
-The media usually portrays the foster system as very bad, with all bad and troubled kids, and then some sort of happy ending. This for sure, is not always true.
    Native Americans:
-Many traditional native Americans are spiritual.
-Many of them that wish to preserve their traditional way of life, live on reservations. Some, simply don’t and live in regular houses and places.
-They invented many technologies such as weapons, clothing, trapping, animal skinning, preservation of food, crops and how to grow food, traditional medicine, and house building.
-The media portrays them as one main stereotype, which is a bit offensive since that is the only representation we see. Which is a heavy accent, redder skin than normal, hair in a ponytail, feathers or headdresses worn in some way, not too smart, and usually linked with a casino in some way. That is sad.

  4. FOSTER CARE AND NATIVE AMERICAN SUMMARIES
    Stratton, Taylor, Jake
The US Foster Care System operates with the local government to take children from unhealthy family situations into custody. It then sorts the children into available homes that align with each child's religious, moral, and, if possible, ethnic upbringing and origin. For a period of time before the children possible work into an adoptive family, the foster care system monitors the environment and social progress of the children. When both the family and child agree upon adoption, the child is taken out of the system to then become a legal member of that family. |

Native Americans were the first established people in America. When European peoples migrated to the Americas, both ethnicities clashed. Over the time periods of the 17th, 18th, and 19th century, Native Americans adjusted to the continent changing and urbanizing. Many events affected all different tribes, but all different tribes influenced the industrialization of the continent. Today most Native American tribes run casinos and reside in reservations to protect their rights and heritage.
