Friday, Dec. 20 Agenda


  • Bell Ringer: 10 minutes Independent Reading
  • Writer’s Workshop 
    • PEER EDIT if first draft done
    • Edit and Revise body paragraphs, intro and conclusion
    • Rubric for paper (due Thursday after 30 minutes)
    • If you aren’t done with your first draft, you need to keep working on it.
    • You need to meet with me if you have a commented on draft of your body paragraphs, an intro and a conclusion: pick a specific focus area (sign up on board)
    • You need to self edit and revise.  I am expecting a solid piece of writing.  You need to make sure you are looking for capitalization, punctuation, spelling, fluency, as well as the analysis stuff that I commented on.
  • Works Cited Page 
    • You need a works cited page, it will only have one entry (for OMM)

    • Intros and Conclusions Notes- put the sheet in your craft lesson section and then follow the steps as you write your intro and conclusion rough drafts

    • Upload draft to Turnitin!!!  Use the purple layer, I’ll be commenting during work time
    • Write Introduction and Conclusion
    • Fix Body Paragraphs
    • Read independent book if done with a complete first/second draft

    • Bell Ringer: “A Rose for Emily” partner discussion –details on my Edublogs blog
        • After completing the sequencing, why do you think Faulkner chose to manipulate the sequence this way? What would the story lose if it was told traditionally?
      • How does this story show the southern region and the time it was written in (an era different from today)?
      • Mood- feeling or atmosphere created by the author
        • How does the diction (word choice), imagery and figurative language create a mood? What is the overall mood?
      • Why is “A Rose for Emily” considered ‘Gothic’? (specific examples (textual evidence))
    • Final Product from Independent book: work with neighbor to look through standards (shared on drive) and start thinking of creative ideas
  • Begin “American Dream…American Conflict”
  • What is the American Dream? (shared with you in Classroom)
    • Answers to questions in your notes/on a copy of the document shared
      • Due tomorrow

Wednesday, Dec. 18 Agenda


  • Bell Ringer: Discussion of Social Values paragraphs
    • What do the quotes and theme show about society’s values during the Great Depression
      • Post on Classroom, then work on your body paragraphs  
    • Try to write one for me (together)
  • Finish rough draft body paras
    • 1 paragraph explaining what the theme of the book and your examples show about the society’s values during the Great Depression
      • Try to think of this for your society paragraph: We can say that people during the GD were or valued because of (what details from your paper?)…
    • Finish ALL Body Paragraphs 
  • Writer’s Workshop:
    • At the ABSOLUTE minimum, you should have a rough draft of all four body paragraphs ready to print out when class starts tomorrow

  • Bell Ringer: Thesis and next steps
    • Thesis as first sentence on rough draft portion of document
    • Your evidence must prove the ENTIRE thesis (theme)
    • Outline check after 20 minutes (need blue highlighted portion) 
    • TIQA- the analysis is the most important part: HOW does the evidence prove/show your theme?
    • 3 paragraphs showing the theme of the book (or two with two pieces of textual evidence in each) and possibly intro/conclusion uploaded to Turnitin by middle of block tomorrow 
  • If you need a break, read your independent book
  • Career Spreadsheet was due last week! -now for the next step Class Schedule (what are you taking for the next three semesters? how many credits do you need? what do you need to make up? etc)

  • Bell Ringer: Connecting brainstorming from last week to Big Ideas and Themes of the book (What issues are faced today that are mentioned, dealt with, experienced, etc in the book?) (fill out sheet alone, we will have time to discuss in 15)
    • For each issue, write what big idea or themes can connect to it
  • Theme and Social Issue in the book (posting, meeting with group) 
    • Post on the Classroom stream post the ** answers from each of your sheets -read your book when done

  • Time to fill out packet sheets (chronolog, characters, big ideas)
  • T-chart on George having to do it...
  • Perspective Journal (sections 5 and 6 together as one full page if same character, or can switch characters half-way for 2 separate entries)
    • Collect chronolog sheet and perspective journals
    • If you aren’t done with the packet or journals, work on them now.  If you are done, read your independent book

  • OMM Perspective Journal Check: at this point you should be done with 5 entries. Read through the student example entry and make sure yours follow the format
  • OMM: Read section 5 and 6
  • In writer’s notebook: In the section 5 of the book, George says that he sort of knew they would never get the farm but told Lennie about it anyway.  Does he really believe this? Why would he continue telling Lennie of the farm if it isn’t a reality? (answer this on the back of your chronolog)

  • Finish OMM 60-65
    • Sheets on the book (Take some time to add to chronolog, conflict, and character details, make sure you are adding to themes as we read/discuss)
    • Big Ideas Notes –You need to post a SECOND piece of textual evidence on the stream posts.  This example must come from pages 38-65
        • add to your paper from reading through comments too
  • Of Mice and Men: List of Conflicts –in the packet 
    • Internal: --character vs. self
    • External:--character vs. character                             --character vs. society --character vs. unknown
    • **After you write each type of conflict, add some examples of that conflict, and explain a little of the why/how.
