•Bell Ringer: Create a research focus question and begin finding articles, sites, etc with information to help answer your question

•Final draft due on Tuesday.  Make sure I have read through it (and commented on it) before you feel it is ready.  Remember, you need an intro, body (with paragraph on society during the GD) and a conclusion.

•Try to think of this for your society paragraph: We can say that people during the GD were    or valued    because of (what details from your paper?)…

•Research goal: Present (many ways possible, you pick the best that fits your audience) your ideas about your research questions. Answers the questions and applies to the audience that most connects to the theme/issue. Need to provide social awareness of this issue that is also seen in the book.

By Monday you should have the peer editing form filled out.

Tuesday, Nov. 4 Agenda

•Bell Ringer: Collect cause and effect sheet, book completion sheets

•Discussion of Social Values paragraphs

•What do your quotes and theme show about society’s values during the Great Depression

•3 paragraphs showing the theme of the book (or two with two pieces of textual evidence in each)

Your rough draft of all body paragraphs should be done by the end of the block (or at least by the beginning of the class on Wednesday)

•Bell Ringer: In writer’s notebook: In the end of the book, George says that he sort of knew they would never get the farm but told Lennie about it anyway.  Does he really believe this? Why would he continue telling Lennie of the farm if it isn’t a reality?

•Bell Ringer: Connecting brainstorming from yesterday to Themes of the book

•Theme and Social Issue in the book

•Discuss the connections to today, build more, start to think of the why/how

   You should have the prewriting portion of the instructions done after 20 minutes of time on Monday (an issue, a theme, at least 3 pieces of textual evidence, a revised thesis)

•Bell Ringer: Start to brainstorm how any ideas from the book are still seen today.  What issues are faced today that are mentioned, dealt with, experienced, etc in the book?

•Reading time (own book, completion sheet due Monday/Tuesday) or perspective journal for section 4 (Lennie, Crooks, Candy)

•Read section 5 and 6

•WN Entry: Slim says to George, “Ya hadda” when talking about Lennie.  Do you agree? What would make you say yes he did, what would make you say no he didn’t and in the end, which would you say more, that this was his only option or that there were others?

•Perspective Journal (sections 5 and 6 together as one full page)

Wednesday, Oct. 29 Agenda

•Bell Ringer: Book Completion reminder

•Read Section 4

•Characters vs. Society: for the four characters we read about in section 4, how do we see them in conflict with society? What part of society, how is it seen, specifically in what we just read. (Talk with a partner)

•In this chapter, we learn more about Lennie, Crooks, Candy, and Curley's wife. What similarities do these three characters share? Bring up when done.

•Theme examples: During work time after we read together today, you need to bring your theme sheet up.  You should have at least one example for each theme from pages 38-65 and one from 66-83 for all as well.

•In this chapter, we see how some people can be cruel to other people. Find two or three examples--why do the characters need to be so cruel in these examples? Or, are they just ignorantly prejudiced and not really being consciously cruel?  Bring up when done.

•Section 4 Perspective Journal

•Read your book or work on book completion sheet when done

Tuesday, Oct. 28 Agenda

•Bell Ringer: List of Conflicts –class notes section

•Internal:  --character vs. self

**After you write each type of conflict, add some examples of that conflict, and for all except character vs. character, explain a little of the why/how.

•Section 3 quiz: On my blog

•2 extra credit questions (if you get them right on the first try), some questions count, some don’t…

•In writer’s notebook: What character in the book do you like most?  Why?  What character do you dislike most? Why? –Bring this up to me when you are done
