  2. catcher in the rye is a angsty adventure that is about nothing, and that is why it would be popular with teens today, because the book is so pointless, people form sometimes conflicting opinions and have evidence to support it.

    1. Very true. I agree with the adventure that is about nothing. I do agree with how the book would be popular because most teens would look at this and say its pointless.

    2. I agree with you in the sense that teens can connect with it but i also disagree with it in the fact that it dose make sense because. it wouldn't have been published if it didn't.

  4. I think that teens today will still connect with Catcher In The Rye and should read it. I disagree with the author of “Prozac Nation,” Elizabeth Wurtzel said,” I’m not sure the latter-day teenager would find comfort in Caulfield the way a few generations past have, because I suspect they are no longer exactly teenagers anymore… as a true age of rebellion and confusion, adolescence went away with the 20th century.” There is still rebellion just in different form, so teens still connect with Holden. I totally agree when Grace states, “They why do teens drink, have sex, and do drugs if they find no need to be consoled? Teenagers today are still rebelling against our society.” Teens are still rebelling today, just not that same exact way it was back then, we still make connections to the book very easily because it is written in the perspective of a teen, that is why we relate. More teens should read this book and make connections that others have.

    1. I agree with this comment because, I also agree that teens should read this book. I like this comment because teens really haven't changed with the rebellion and the way they treat others. I also agree that we can relate so good because the book is coming from the same perspective as us.

    2. I really agree to Lora's point of view, because I believe that teens in today society still connected with Holden. And also, teens, should be reading this book so it give them understanding about Holden situation and adventure toward the book. Also, teens can connect....

  5. My main idea is that I agree that teens should read this book and that teens can relate with this book as well. 19 year old Ishan said “ I love this book so much and the reason it will always always have value is not because of some amazing quality of Holden that readers relate to.” From the book Catcher in the Rye Holden said “ something always goes wrong.” I picked this quote from the book because i believe that it sums up teens today, because at some point in their life something always goes wrong.

  8. The book”The Catcher In The Rye” is a book that should be read by teens today. In the book; “Catcher In The Rye” Holden says “Life is a game, that one plays according to the rules”. This is something that relates to teens from back then and today. Life is something that is played by choices you make on your own, many people make the same moves, and even though its been years since you made that move, it is still likely that people make the same move(s) as you did.
Reading an article called ‘A Teenage Throwback” By:Mark Bauerlein, he says “Holden Caulfield is a throwback, the troubled teen of another time. Who needs him?”. I strongly disagree with him. Holden may be a teen from the past, but that doesn't mean we can’t relate. Teens have many similar problems like holden does. Our lives around us has changed, but 60 years doesn't change every teens train of thought and reaction to everyday events

    1. I agree with this post because teenagers should read this book because, Holden and teenagers in our generation have many connections. I agree with this post mainly because I really disagree with the quote from Mark Bauerlein that you used because teenagers are still going through the same troubles.

    2. I agree because Holden is still relevant to today's teens even though he is a "throwback". Teens can and will still relate to him.

  9. I think that catcher in the rye should not be read by anyone today because the book makes very little sense and all the main character does is complain about “phonies”.

    1. I do not agree with you. This book does make sense if you pay attention in class as it is being read. Holden talks about a daily life for him, the book may not seem to have a main point, but he does talk about more than "phonies".

      Delete
    2. I strongly disagree with everything in this. I disagree because you have no textual evidence that makes sense, and anybody that didn't even read the book could make this opinion.

      Delete
    3. I do not agree this this. The book is not all about Holden complaining all the time, Holden talks about what all went on in his time period.

  10. I think that Catcher in the Rye is a book that teens should read because It could connect to them in lots of ways. It could change there life. A quote that might make someone relate to this book is, “After he left, I put on my pajamas and bathrobe and my old hunting hat, and starting writing the composition”. Some people could relate to that because they might do the same exact thing. Some people would connect to this book because they would be read it and think of it as something just like there own life.

    2. I agree with your post because it is true that teenagers should read this book, and I also agree that there are many parts of the book that a teen could think "oh yeah I do that too" it really relates to the "real" life of teenagers.

  11. Personally I think The catcher and the rye is some what relevant. Holden defiantly uses out dated words and his overall experience in the book would never happen in todays world, but his feelings were the same. Holden is depressed and hates people that don't understand him just like teenagers today. He may whine a lot and seem kind of self absorbed, but as a reader we (teens) have to remember some of the horrible things he has gone through. Just like someone of his age today if their brother died they'd act very similar ways. Also Holden says people are "phonies" more then enough times. That is kind of like are society today when we judge people we think we know enough about or think are weird. Holden is a teenager from a different time and gets away with different things but has similar issues in today teens society. According to the pocket sheet “ Holden Caulfield, damaged and solitary, voiced so well my stern but halting judgemant of those phony adults at home and beyond, and he tossed the word “goddam” around as if he’d really earned the right to do so”. Also, a quote from the book is when Holden starting talking about old Selma about her being a phony. According to the book “Old Selma Thurmer - she was the headmaster's daughter - showed up at the games quite often, but she wasn't exactly the type that drove you mad with desire. She was a pretty nice girl, though. I sat next to her once in the bus from Agerstown and we sort of struck up a conversation. I liked her. She had a big nose and her nails were all bitten down and bleedy-looking and she had on those damn falsies that point all over the place, but you felt sort of sorry for her. What I liked about her, she didn't give you a lot of horse manure about what a great guy her father was. She probably knew what a phony slob he was”.

    1. I agree with Bryan because, I do think that today we do judge people and that is like Holden in his time calling people phonies.

    2. brian- I mostly agree with your ideas, you get your point across very well and you make your voice heard through your writing, good work!

  12. I believe the book does connect with teens today because teens have not changed very much and they still rebel and I am not the only person who agrees. Grace from the Raw Truth also states that “teenagers don’t say phony instead they say things like fake or superficial”. I agree with the statement because words have changed and they still have the same true meaning. Another example would be from the book when Holden says that all guys are phony’s pg. 131 and today you see many people call each other fake because of a different personality towards different people. So therefor I believe it is a very relevant book.

  13. Yes. This book is something that teens of our generation should read because it is a book that teens can connect to. Even though times have changed the things that Holden thinks about in the book are still things that are thought of today but are just put into different words. For example in the where have teens gone article one of the girls wrote “ I have read this book it has affected me and my friends said the same as well”.

  14. The book Catcher in the Rye by J.D Salinger should be read by teenagers because of the connections it has between Holden and most teenages in our generation. “I think the book may be a little too close to bone with a lot of kids.” From the article “A Timeless Voice” by Patrick Welsh. When Welsh says that I think he means that teenagers can relate so much to what Holden is going through, and the struggles he is facing throughout the book. The struggles I think Welsh is referring to is the depression, and trying to fit in with other cliques and groups. “People never notice anything” (Salinger 9) is a quote from Holden from when he is feeling lonely and depressed. The quote from the book supports Welsh’s statement. Another quote from the book that supports Welsh’s statement is “Something always goes wrong with everything” (Salinger 91). I think that teenagers connect to the book because of how real Holden is with what he says and talks about through out the whole book.

  15. I would say yes the book the book can connect with teens today but at a lower level. the article a greater connection a person named Chelsea said “ i loved it, because, I connected with it immediately. it’s naive to say teenage are no longer teens today” in the book he talks about how grown up he looks or thinks he is cause of the way he acts and his appearance. In the book he Holden was asked how old he was and said 22 but actually lied about being that old to get with sunny.but in the end he was too scared to do anything and his true childishness came out.

    1. I agree in some aspects of this. Teens do connect to this book because it is written from a teenager's point of view so we can relate to Holden.

    2. I'm not really sure what your paragraph is suppose to exactly be about, but i do not agree with the book relating to teens at a "lower level" today. I'd say it all depends on the teen reading it on weather or not if connects with them or not. What is you proof that he was lying about his age?

  16. Students should still read The Catcher and The Rye because it connects with thought of drinking and smoking as well as girls these are all topics that teens still deal with. i agree with the article Raw Honesty because it talks about ’’why do teens drink, have sex, and do drugs if the find no need to be consoled’’ Another line that still would be true comes from Holden, ‘’Girls you never know what they’re going to think’’ (Salinger 136). this is a book that teens should still read.

    1. I agree with that teenagers should read the book, but for completely different reasons. Just because some teenagers drink and smoke does not mean that all teenagers drink and smoke so not all teens would relate. This post is very "judgmental" on teenagers in our generation, so I don't think it's valid to say that because Holden drinks and smokes that teenagers would relate. There are many bigger points in the book that would make teenagers relate to the book.

In my own opinion the teens from today are not like teens back in the day. The all act different and had a little more access to likker back in the day. I ain’t really know what to say about that that is all I really have to say about that. If you look in some of the things the all of the things. in the article like holden was right you would get all of the answers that you would need to have.

  19. In the article A Timeless Voice By Patrick Welsh he states “its a truly great novel” SO why shouldn't teens have to read a truly great novel? Why shouldn't we have to read a great novel. It would be better than reading something that is not well written and we can’t relate to.This way we can understand it better and we understand that teens haven’t changed much in the years. The reason why this novel is so great is because everyone can relate to it. When Holden “ the driver was kinda a wise guy. I can’t turn around here, Mac.” I think that everyone knows the once wise guy who makes smart remarks. So with all of this said I think that everyone can relate to this book which makes it a great novel so teens should have to read Catcher in the Rye.

  20. In the article “ Raw Honesty” By Grace she states “Catcher In The Rye had greatly affected me.” When a great source like that say it has greatly affected a person everyone should atleast try and read it. I believe this book was very easy for teens to connect to and might make them realize that there are people out there just like them.Holdens life is so crazy not knowing what is going to happen next. But the language he uses and what he does makes adults things their children should not learn that way of living. When mr spencer ask holden “ How do you feel about this boy?” it makes holden think about how his life is all working out and with this book it helps kids think about how they are living there live and might help them see to change the way there livin so they don't end up like holden.

What I think about “The Catcher of the Rye” is that it still connects to teens this day. The reason why it still dose, is because teens like to put people in groups and also have sex, do drugs and, drink. I agree with Holden was right in one of the paragraph says “ Times have not changed as much as you think.”
