Why read Catcher in the Rye?

There are many reasons why I chose this book for us to read, but I want to know what you think.  Please answer the following question as a comment on this post.

  • What should people take away from the book Catcher in the Rye? (lessons, ideas, meanings, knowledge about life, etc)

Your answer should be around a paragraph in length.  Make sure that you give more than just one possible point to take away!!

    1. I think a lot of the stupid drama stuff should be taken out of the book and that is pretty much what the whole book is about so therefore the book should have not been written. Mainly him talking about the phony stuff and he is pretty much a hypocrite. Mainly those are just ideas that i have and they need to tell a little bit more about his life and stuff.

  2. a big idea is a clever or important intention or theme the author is trying to portray through their literature, there are some big ideas in the catcher in the rye, one is to be kind to your siblings because it may be their last day on planet earth. another one may be that home isn't all that far away, even if you feel a hundred miles away. These big ideas made the catcher in the rye popular in the postwar period.

  3. What people should take knowledge of life from this book is to not be mean to your siblings because you never know what might happen to anyone. A lesson is to not fail school because life will be harder. For meaning in the Book Catcher in the Rye how much kids and maybe some adults can relate to the book now and when they were younger. Ideas you can get out of this book, is that you may think that life is good but if you do something wrong and keep doing it, it can change your life.

  4. I think people should take away from the book the facts that this is a classic book about what the life of a teen was like in the late 1940's, and that it gives us some details of how life was different back then.

  5. People should take many things out of this book. somethings are the way you should act towards others because things will come back your way. you should follow what you have planned in life and not change this at the the last moment and do what other people think you should. you should also respect people around you and set a good example for your self which will allow you to succeed more and more as life goes on.

  6. I think that they should take out the smoking because, although teens are faced with the smoking option it is not as big of a problem that teens face now. For example back in the fifties the doctors recommended smoking but that's no the case anymore. The drinking should be taken out it is the same as smoking and its harder for teens to get their hands on alcohol in a restaurant and other places.

  7. They should take away that they're not the only ones that has the problems. Lots of teens think that they're the only ones that are failing out of schools. People should take away the lesson of actually caring about school. They should also take away that life isn’t always going to be handed to them on a silver platter. They actually have to work to get anywhere in life. They should learn that school is more important thing in there life so far.

  8. People who read this book should understand and see that this book has alot of meaning. Like when Holden says he wants to be the catcher in the, he is saying that he wants to catch the kids before they fall off the cliff or run into bad things. The book also shows many other life lessons along the story. One of the other lessons is that no matter what a person can get though life espicially teens, it may seem tough but you can get through it. If Holden can after everything he has been through so can you.

  9. From reading "catcher In The Rye", teens should realize that being a teen can be hard and difficult at times, but it gets better as you go through it. A huge part to take away from the book is that being a kid is and can be fun at times yes, but there comes a time to move on from you childhood, and face reality and the consequences of your actions.

  10. If people take this book seriously, there are many things you can take away from it. One of them is that Holden wants to be the catcher in the rye and watch over the kids playing the game of life, help them succeed and not fail. There are things he wishes he did differently, like most people,, with himself and with Allie. That is a life lesson there, to not to have regrets. Holden thought about it a lot and it tore him up. Depression is real and it is hard to deal with alone, like he did.

  11. There are many things to take away from this book. I think that there are many lessons to be taught through out the book. Some are loss of innocence, love and sex, loneliness and I think the most important life and death. loss and innocence because Holden had a hard time accepting that Allie was gone and for no reason. He also teaches us about love and sex because for Holden sex is very discomforting and has a sensitive soul deep down inside. Holden also shows loneliness because he always has to be around someone and gets lonely very easy but every time he wants to call a girl he always ends the social experience before he can get hurt. And finally life and death most of Holden's emotions come from Allies death. When James Castle jumped out the window Holden enters some of the same thoughts of suicide but decides to numb himself instead. I think that all of these lessons or thoughts should be taken away from Catcher in the Rye because they stand out and have a lot of things that relate to the lessons in the book.

  12. There are a few things to take away from the book Catcher in the Rye. It gave other teens a character that they can relate to. Someone who looks at the world and doesn't like everything he sees. They can relate to the fact he doesn't feel like he fits in anywhere, and searching for where he belongs. It's a huge transition between childhood and adulthood, and Holden's journey allows other teens to realize that they aren't alone in their feelings of disgust at the adult world that they must enter.

  13. From all the stuff I read in all the chapters and all of the stuff that I have ever heard. I honesty did not like one thing in this book. This book could almost go into the same category. I mean this book is like a fish out of water. Its just flopping around everywhere and it ain't going anywhere it ain't accomplishing nothing. I mean this book has about as much sense as a stick of butter. It would almost be in the same category as Romeo and Juliet which was a terrible movie. This book didn't make me feel anything except for boring.

  14. The book The Catcher in the Rye has many points that teenagers can learn from. During the book Holden is in and out of schools and doesn't try at all and has no ambition to even care about trying but by the end of the book he realizes that he should of tried, and people look at him differently because he flunked out of such a good school. I think that “story” from the book should make teenagers realize that not trying at anything isn’t going to get you anywhere in the long run. Also another point teenagers could take from the book is that there are people that care about you, you just have to let them in so they can show you that they care. I believe that could be something teenagers could take from the book because of how Holden always pushes and ignores and tries to run away from the people that try to help him, like his English teachers and sister.

  15. There are many things a person could take out of this book. A person can take knowledge out of this book to stay in school and try your best. People may hate school now, but when you get a job and that first pay check its a pretty good feeling after all the work a person puts into school. There are losses in this book to there are know reasons kids today need to read about sex, and love but someday everyone will experience it. So better now than never, but the way he lives his life is different than a kid now days. All kids need to take out of this book how to live there lives correctly if they dont want to fight with there past in the future.
