"How to Tell a True War Story" Discussion

Once everyone in your group has shared the work done for their jobs, and you have gone through all of the questions on the sheet, talk about these questions:  Then post your group's ideas/answers as a comment to this post.  Once all have posted, we will read through the answers as a whole class.

According to O'Brien, how do you tell a true war story? What does he mean when he says that true war stories are never about war? What does he mean when he writes of one story, "That's a true story that never happened"?

What are some challenges soldiers might face in communicating their experiences in war to civilians, using examples from the text. Why is it so hard to tell a true war story? How, according to O'Brien, can we tell if a war story is true?
What is your group's overall opinion of what O'Brien is saying about war and storytelling?

  1. According to Tim to tell a "true" war story you don't jut get right to the point you add dramatic details to the story which all may not be true. Tim doesn't like to tell people the true meaning of war story because it brings back memories that are not all that. Us people can not tell if a war story is true or not because we are not there

how do you tell a true war story? Don't talk about the war but the emotions during the war. How do you tell a true war story? Doesn't necessarily have a moral. he means that true war stories are about the emotions and not the individual war. (What does he mean when he writes of one story, "That's a true story that never happened"?)
Its His true feelings and emotions just explained in a more entertaining way.
(What are some challenges soldiers might face in communicating their experiences in war to civilians, using examples from the text.) "She wasn't listening. It wasn't a war story it was a love story." (page 85 O' Brien)
(Why is it so hard to tell a true war story?) Because what you experience in a war doesn't make sense, so when you write it you gotta use metaphors so people understand the true meaning of the war story.
(How, according to O'Brien, can we tell if a war story is true?)
There is more useless stuff in a true war story than just bullets and death.

He is doing a great job explaining his experiences of war, even though he might not say the truth its the same emotions.

  3. 1)A true war story is not about war but about your team and what people have inside, emotions and fears. Telling a true story is too painful to tell so usually are covered with false information.
2)They didn't experienced what they did, they don;t know what staying on the battlefield really means. The sister that doesn't respond to the letter is an example. We can tell if a a war story is true if is not focused on the battles etc...
3)Some say that he is spicing up the stories to make them seem more interesting, other that he is not really specific in what he says

  4. There is no point in a true war story, you can tell it's true by the question(s) you ask, and you have to keep telling the story. War stories are consist of emotions such as love. He tries to get his point across in a more deeper aspect. This helps the story's atmosphere more intense by keeping the reader interested.
Civilians will never be able to be in the soldiers' shoes, feeling what they felt, hearing what they heard, seeing what they saw, and essentially how it affected them. In the novel it says, "Mitchell Sanders was right. For the common soldier, at least, war has the feel the spiritual texture, of a great ghosty fog, thick and permanent" (O'Brien 82). This quote shows that you don't get the actual feeling of being told a story versus being involved in an event. A person can't tell the difference because they can't give the full details of the personal experience. A person can tell a true war story if they keep on telling it.
Sometimes people exaggerate the truth to make the story more detailed and to keep the reader interested.
