"Love" and "Spin" Discussion

Write your group's answers to these questions as a comment on this post.

1. What is the purpose of each story? Is there a purpose of them together ("Spin" following "Love", etc)? Why did he put these stories early in the book?  Cite at least one specific piece of textual evidence for each story as to the purpose individually and together (with a page number)

2. Explain why you think Azar did what he did to the puppy? And what does he mean with what he says?

3. Where in both stories are there moments of beauty? Give one piece of textual evidence to show from each story.

4. What are stories for, according to what you read? Do you as a group agree? Do you think there are other reasons? What?

Once you've answered these questions, grab a black-spined orange lit book and read the interview with Tim on page 760,  Add to your answers (the comment your group is writing on this post) some interesting points from the interview that you think apply to what we've read already or will apply to what we will be reading.

  1. The purpose of the story "Love" is for Jimmy to gain the love of Martha. In the book it says that Jimmy wants Martha's love and says, "Maybe she will read it and come begging" (O'Brien 29). The purpose of stories is for remembering the past and the events within it with more than one point of view. (Depending on the story) To get the stories on paper, showing what war consists of, and all the emotions with it that comes. In the book it shows that memories are important, "What sticks to memory, often, are odd little fragments that have no beginning and no end" (O'Brien 36).

3.still in love with the girl, sunset, there is still hope, “maybe she will READ IT AND COME BEGGING” ( o’brein 29), “ or ted Lavender adopting an orphan puppy” O’Brian pg 36
    4. “Stories are for joining the past with the future”, we all agree ( o’brein 38)

he liked Canada, he didn't think that the soldiers were heros they were just regular people, they were heros when they woke up every morning and the got up and walked knowing at any minute you would die, in the future he will be talking about love and Martha, he will still mourn over ted lavenders death,we predict that he will be talking more about Canada, and also how he started talking about being a hero we predict that he will go in more depth about being a hero

Love: its about what love can cost. He was thinking about the girl which caused him to be unaware and Ted was a cost of that. ( Page 12 tim O' brien)
spin: even in a bad war there is good memories and good times which is what all the short stories are about. Not bloody stories necessarily, happy stories too, and even a few peace stories. (page 35 tim O' brien )
    part 2 Q1
that you are both experiencing bad
    part 3 Q1
to help explain his platoon in the war so we see how they are when they are not in war.
    part 4 Q1
love: jimmy rubbed his eyes and said he'd never forgiven himself for lavender's death. (page 27 tim O' brien)
Spin: The war wasn't all terror and violence. (page 31 Tim O' Brien)

    Question 2
Because he didn't want people in his platoon to be unconcentrated.
part 2 Q2 he shouldn't be taken responsible for making a selfish move.

    Question 3
Love: "and not much later we were laughing about some of the craziness that used to go on." (page 27 Tim O' Brien)
Spin: "when a little boy asked for a piece of candy (page 31 Tim O' Brien)
    Question 4
Even in a bad war there was good memories and good times. Yeah we are agreeing on it.

Tim O' brien interview key points:
That even though such bad things happened they even think back on some of the times, and not only with bad thoughts. The way a war got everybody close and had to trust everybody was one of the better parts.
He also talks about how a lot of veterans doesn't think he has written enough about it, which he agrees with in the book.

things that might happen later in the book: he talks about every soldier in Vietnam is a hero, because he didn't went AWOL. Which i think someone in his platoon will do later.

  5. 1. Together: "When memories erase, when there is nothing to remember but the story"(Pg 38, O'Brian) To remember those they had lost. To keep the memory of the war. Spin: What sticks to memory, often, are those odd little fragments that have no beginning and no end.(Pg 36, O'Brian) The little things are the things that stick to you the most and have the most value. Love: “ It doesn’t matter, I love her.”(Pg 29, O’Brian) He loves her, even though he thinks she doesn’t love him back.

    2. He is immature, childish, and likes to get reactions out of people.(like a little brother). He says he is just a boy so he doesn’t know any better. He thinks he can’t be held responsible for his mistakes.

    3. Talking about the beautiful field of elephant grass that sways in the wind. When Ted Lavender adopted that orphan puppy.

    4. “ Stories are for joining the past and future” For those late hours in the night when you can’t remember how you got from where you were to where you are.”(Pg 38, O’Brian). Yes, because it gives a reminder of where you came from and what your morals are. Stories can also be used to preserve the memory of those you lost and to share those stories with those who are still with you.

    Tim O’Brian Interview:

They talk about their physical conditions from walking. He wishes he could stop walking and fall.
He was talking about just keep humping. it’s attractive after you see people dropping like flies.
Knowing you might die with every step and just keep walking. every step they take, they risk the chance of dying.
