Monday, Jan. 4 Agenda

Bell Ringer: Find what you wrote about the quote from page 20
Finish reading 20-26
Interpret the other quotes.  Bring your interpretations up to me when done, then move on to the next two stories
Independently Read “Love” and “Spin”
While reading, mark evidence in the book to help you answer questions as well as keep track of important ideas or events, and mark areas of confusion (where you have questions)
Check notes on “Love” and “Spin”: when you are done, bring them to me (your book filled with post-its)
If you finished the two stories, read your independent book or fill out the book completion sheet (grab one from the last folder in the crate, ask questions if you have any).

Discuss the stories with small group

  1. The purpose of the story "Love" is for Jimmy to gain the love of Martha. In the book it says that Jimmy wants Martha's love and says, "Maybe she will read it and come begging" (O'Brien 29). The purpose of stories is for remembering the past and the events within it with more than one point of view. (Depending on the story) To get the stories on paper, showing what war consists of, and all the emotions with it that comes. In the book it shows that memories are important, "What sticks to memory, often, are odd little fragments that have no beginning and no end" (O'Brien 36).
    2. Azar probably thought that everyone would have laughed when he blew up the puppy but he was wrong. He intentionally did not mean no harm and he is just a boy and he means it. When Azar means he's just a boy he means he is innocent and didn't mean no harm.
    3. In both stories there were moments shown of beauty and happiness, in the story ‘love’ Jimmy's love for Martha shows beauty. “It does not matter… I love her” (O’Brien Tim 28). In the second story spin they talk about being at war while there are still moments of peace. “ … For a few seconds everything goes quiet and you look up and see the sun and a few puffy white clouds… even though you're pinned down by a war you never felt more at peace” (O’Brien Tim 36)
    4. Stories are for holding memories and to share their experiences with others. We agree. other reasons would be to express themselves.
    5. Interesting points too the interview
Your life is in someone’s hands when you are sleeping so even if you don't like them you have too learn too trust them
Risking their lives everyday not knowing if they were going too live
People think of Soldiers as sissies

    1. Things that we predict about the book is he has more then one girlfriend. How is was going to go to Canada before the war. Learn how people called the soldiers cowards.
Things that already happened in the book are he got drafted into war and he is courageous.
